Build it in, don't set it on top
A firepit dropped onto a finished patio always looks dropped on. Building it into the paver field — with the surrounding courses cut around it and a seating radius planned into the layout — costs very little more when it's done at the same time, and it's the difference between a feature and an accessory.
The same applies to seat walls. A wall built as part of the patio ties into the base and the border course. One added two years later sits on top of a finished surface and reads that way.

Gas or wood
Wood-burning pits cost less to build and give you the fire people picture when they imagine a firepit. Gas costs more up front, requires a line run, and gives you instant on and off with no smoke, no ash and no burn ban interruptions.
If there's any chance you'll want gas later, have the line sleeved during installation. Running it afterwards means opening the patio back up.

Common questions
How big should the patio around a firepit be?
Plan for at least seven feet of clear space between the pit edge and anything behind the seating, so chairs can be pushed back without leaving the paved surface. That's the measurement people most often come up short on.
Gas or wood-burning firepit?
Wood costs less to build and gives you a real fire. Gas costs more up front and needs a line run, but turns on instantly with no smoke or ash. If gas is a maybe, sleeve the line during installation — retrofitting means reopening the patio.
Can you build a firepit into an existing patio?
Often yes. We lift the pavers in the pit area, build the structure, and cut the surrounding courses back in. It's more labour than building it in from the start, but far less disruptive than people expect.
